The short answer
- Cheapest good option: free Spanish classes at a public adult school (CEPA) or a Comunidad de Madrid integration centre (CEPI). Several CEPAs in Madrid say they take students all year while places last.
- Best value with a fixed start date: the Escuelas Oficiales de Idiomas (EOI). Five EOIs in Madrid city teach Spanish in 2026-27, and a course costs €222 or €250 (no extra admin fee from 2026-27). The next intake is the February term: apply 15 December 2026 to 12 January 2027, with a €19 level test first.
- Fastest option: an intensive group course at a private academy, usually sold as "20 lessons" (about 15 hours) a week for roughly €190 to €240 a week. You can start almost any Monday.
- Your first month: take a level test, put the EOI December window in your calendar, go to one intercambio (language exchange) a week, and pick a daily habit you can actually keep.
Madrid runs in Spanish. Unlike Barcelona or Valencia there is no second regional language to think about, and unlike the Costa del Sol there is no large English-speaking bubble that does your errands for you. If you live here, Spanish is what turns the health centre, the landlord, the comunidad de vecinos meeting and the kids' school into conversations. This guide is for residents: it compares every route in Madrid by price, hours and the date you have to act, because the most common mistake is not choosing the wrong course. It is missing the enrolment window for the cheap one.
What are the options for learning Spanish in Madrid?
There are six realistic routes in Madrid, and they differ more in timing than in quality. Public courses are cheap or free but have fixed intakes; private academies cost more but start any week.
| Option | Cost (2026) | Hours | When you can start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public adult school (CEPA) | Free | About 3 to 4 hours a week, school year | September; many take students all year if places remain |
| Integration centre (CEPI) or city council office | Free | Varies by centre | Register in person or online when a course opens |
| EOI (5 schools in the city) | €222 (120 h) or €250 (135 h) per course | 4 classes a week for a term (A1 to B2) | September or February; apply weeks before |
| Private academy, intensive group | About €190 to €240 a week | "20 lessons", about 15 hours a week | Most Mondays |
| Private academy, evening group | About €150 to €200 per 4 weeks | About 3 to 4 hours a week | Monthly |
| Private 1:1 teacher | About €35 to €42 an hour | Whatever you book | Any day |
| Intercambios and apps | Free or low cost | Your choice | Tonight |
Private academy figures are from the published price lists of four Madrid schools, checked in October 2026; most also charge a one-off enrolment fee of about €50 to €75. Public prices and dates are from the Comunidad de Madrid and EOI Jesús Maestro (links in Sources).
Can I learn Spanish for free in Madrid?
Yes, in three ways, all public and all free of tuition.
Public adult schools (CEPA)
The Comunidad de Madrid's adult-education centres (Centros de Educación de Personas Adultas, CEPA) can offer Spanish for foreigners, with classes of up to about 20 students. For 2026-27 the regional calendar set applications for 1 to 8 September 2026 and classes from 21 September 2026, and centres can keep enrolling during the year if they have places. Individual Madrid CEPAs advertise free enrolment, levels A1 to B1, about 3 to 4 hours a week, and enrolment open all year while places last. You must normally be 18 or over. Ask the CEPA nearest your home; each one runs its own Spanish groups.
Integration centres (CEPI)
The Comunidad de Madrid's Centros de Participación e Integración (CEPI) run free Spanish classes from literacy level up to DELE A2 preparation, with priority for immigrants. In Madrid city there are CEPIs in Arganzuela (Ronda de Segovia 34), Chamartín (Calle Canillas 11), Tetuán (Calle Nuestra Señora del Carmen 17) and Villaverde (Calle Francisco del Pino 16). You register in person (Comunidad de Madrid, page updated September 2026).
The city council's immigrant information office
The Ayuntamiento de Madrid's Oficina Municipal de Información y Orientación para la Integración de Población Inmigrante runs Spanish classes from literacy to B2, plus DELE A2 preparation, at its northern office (Calle Juan Pantoja 2, Tetuán), with a level test first. Registration for autumn 2026 opened online on 17 September 2026 and places go in order of arrival. The official pages do not state a price; it is a public service, but confirm when you register.
Free places go fast in September. The CEPA and council courses fill at the start of the school year. If you arrive in Madrid mid-year, phone or visit two or three centres near you and ask about places or a waiting list, and put next September in your calendar now. For 2027-28, the CEPA application window is 15 to 30 June 2027.
How does the EOI (Escuela Oficial de Idiomas) work for Spanish in Madrid?
The Escuelas Oficiales de Idiomas are Spain's public language schools, with qualified teachers, a fixed syllabus and official certificates valid across Spain. In 2026-27 five EOIs in Madrid city teach Spanish as a foreign language: Jesús Maestro (Calle Jesús Maestro 5, Chamberí, the largest Spanish offer), Carabanchel, Embajadores, Tribunal and Valdezarza (Comunidad de Madrid, oferta educativa 2026-2027).
In the city, A1 and A2 are only taught as one-term (cuatrimestral) courses: four classes a week, Monday to Thursday, in morning or evening groups, either September to January or February to June. At Jesús Maestro, A1 and A2 courses are 120 hours and B1 to C2 are 135 hours; C1 and C2 are annual courses of two classes a week. Some schools also run annual B1 and B2 groups and blended (semipresencial) options. You must be 16 or over in the year you start, and every new student takes a level test (prueba de clasificación, €19), partly online, whose result is valid for two school years.

50% off or free for some groups
50% for a general large family (familia numerosa); free for special large families, disability of 33% or more, and victims of terrorism or gender violence. The number one mistake: missing the window. You apply online through the Comunidad de Madrid's Raíces system within fixed dates, and you can list up to 12 options in one application. When a group has more applicants than places, the Comunidad's annual public draw decides the order. Most Spanish groups are not offered in the July leftover-places round, so the December and June windows are the ones that count. EOI Jesús Maestro says it posts the details of the February round at the end of November.

How much do Spanish classes cost at a Madrid academy?
At a private academy in Madrid, the standard intensive course is sold as 20 lessons a week, where a lesson is 45 to 50 minutes, so about 15 hours of class. It typically costs €190 to €240 for a single week, or about €690 to €900 for four weeks, falling to about €165 to €190 a week on long bookings. Evening groups of 3 to 4 hours a week run about €150 to €200 per four weeks. Private one-to-one classes are usually €35 to €42 an hour. Expect a one-off enrolment fee of €50 to €75 on top. (Published price lists of four Madrid schools, checked October 2026; one school already lists slightly lower 2027 rates.)
What you pay for is flexibility and pace: smaller groups, start dates nearly every Monday, and timetables built around working adults. If you have a deadline, such as a job interview, a DELE date or a baby on the way and a paediatrician to talk to, an academy is the fastest route.
Many academies also sell long intensive packages tied to the Spanish student visa. Those are a different product: if you already live here on another permit, you do not need one.
How do I choose a Spanish school in Madrid?
Start with accreditation, then check that the timetable survives your actual week. The filters that matter:
- Instituto Cervantes accreditation. Schools in the Instituto Cervantes accreditation system (SACIC) are inspected on teaching, facilities and how honestly they inform students, and are re-evaluated every three years. The official list of accredited centres in Spain is on acreditacion.cervantes.es. It is the single best filter, and it is free to check.
- A real level test and a trial class. Good schools test your speaking, not just a grammar quiz, and let you sit in on a class before you pay for a month.
- Group size. Ask for the maximum, not the average. A smaller group is much of what you pay a private school for; in a big one you will mostly listen.
- Hours, not lessons. Many Madrid schools sell "20 lessons a week" where a lesson is 45 to 50 minutes, so the real figure is about 15 hours. Compare price per hour, not per week.
- A timetable you can keep. The most common reason adults quit is not the teacher. It is a class at 19:00 across town after a full workday. Pick the school near your home or office.
- Cancellation and refund terms. Read them before paying for a long package, especially discounted 12-week blocks.
- Exam preparation, if you need it. If citizenship is the goal, ask whether the school runs DELE A2 and CCSE preparation and whether it is an exam centre itself. The free CEPI classes also include DELE A2 preparation.
Are language apps enough to learn Spanish in Madrid?
Apps are good for vocabulary and for keeping a daily streak, but on their own they rarely get adults to conversation. They train recognition (tapping the right answer) far more than production (saying what you mean, under pressure, to a real person). Use them as the daily five minutes around a course or an intercambio, not instead of one. The best mix for most residents of Madrid is something structured, something social and something daily.
DELE, SIELE or CCSE: which Spanish exam do I need?
It depends on why you need a certificate. All three are run by the Instituto Cervantes, and the dates and prices are the same in Madrid as everywhere else in Spain:
| Exam | What it is | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| DELE | Diploma at one fixed level (A1 to C2), paper sessions on set dates; never expires | Spanish citizenship (A2 or higher), jobs, university |
| SIELE | Computer-based test that scores you across levels; book a slot at an exam centre; certificate valid five years | Jobs and universities that accept it, when you need a result fast |
| CCSE | Test on the Spanish constitution and society, 25 questions in 45 minutes, in Spanish | Spanish citizenship, alongside the DELE |
SIELE Global costs €155 at Spanish university exam centres in 2026 (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid price list), and you can register until 48 hours before a session. For citizenship, the rules name the DELE, so SIELE is not the route.

Dates from the Instituto Cervantes exam calendar (examenes.cervantes.es, checked 6 October 2026). The Friday dates in May and November are mainly the school-age DELE; adults sit the Saturday. Registration closes five to nine weeks before each exam, so the next DELE A2 you can still book is 12 February 2027. The Instituto Cervantes says registration for the 2027 DELE opens on 18 November 2026.

Pass mark 15 of 25.Where to sit it in Madrid: exams are held at Instituto Cervantes-approved exam centres, mostly universities and accredited language schools. In Madrid these include the Universidad Complutense's Centro Complutense para la Enseñanza del Español and Universidad Nebrija, both DELE centres. You register online through the Instituto Cervantes and choose the centre and date during registration; the full list of DELE and CCSE centres in Madrid is on examenes.cervantes.es.
Do I need the DELE A2 for Spanish citizenship?
Yes, in most cases. To get Spanish nationality by residence you must pass two Instituto Cervantes exams: the DELE at level A2 or higher and the CCSE. A2 is a basic level: you can handle everyday situations, short conversations and simple forms. If you already hold a B1 or higher DELE, it counts.
- Exempt from the DELE: people whose nationality of origin (not acquired) is that of a Spanish-speaking country. They still take the CCSE.
- Exempt from both: applicants under 18 and people with judicially modified legal capacity.
- Dispensed from the CCSE: people who completed compulsory secondary education (ESO) in Spain.
Budget €223 for the two exams at 2026 prices (€138 for DELE A2 plus €85 for the CCSE), before the nationality application fee itself. Book the DELE A2 early: it is offered more often than other levels, but registration closes weeks ahead and popular Madrid centres fill up. This is general information, not legal advice; check your own case with the Ministry of Justice or an immigration lawyer.
How do language exchanges (intercambios) work in Madrid?
An intercambio is a free swap: you help someone with your language, they help you with Spanish. Madrid has one of the biggest exchange scenes in Spain, in three forms.
- Weekly exchange nights in bars. Organisers take over a bar for the evening, hand out name tags showing the languages you speak and want, and rotate tables. Entry is usually free or the price of a drink. Search Meetup or local Facebook groups for "intercambio Madrid"; the big ones run around Sol, Malasaña and Lavapiés most weeks.
- One-to-one tandem partners. You meet the same person regularly, for example 30 minutes in Spanish, then 30 minutes in English. Tandem apps and university notice boards are the usual way to find one. This is where real progress happens, because the same partner remembers your mistakes.
- School and community-centre exchanges. Several academies and some cultural centres run free conversation evenings open to non-students. Ask at your nearest centro cultural municipal.
Make intercambios work: arrive with three things you want to be able to say this week (calling the landlord about the boiler, booking at the centro de salud, chatting at the school gate) and practise exactly those. Madrid's exchange nights are big and very international, so it is easy to end up speaking English all night; insist on the half-and-half rule.
How long does it take to become conversational in Spanish?
For an English speaker, comfortable everyday conversation (around B1) usually takes several hundred hours of study and practice, and most adults living in Madrid reach it in one to two years of steady part-time effort. For comparison, the US Foreign Service Institute puts Spanish in its easiest group for English speakers and plans about 30 weeks of full-time training, 23 class hours a week plus self-study, to reach professional working proficiency.
Living in Madrid helps more than living on the coast, because daily life here really is in Spanish, but plenty of people still spend years working in English. What speeds it up is daily contact you cannot avoid: phoning instead of emailing, ordering at the counter, joining a neighbourhood activity, and reading local news in Spanish once your level allows it.
Learning Spanish in Madrid: FAQ
How long does it take to get conversational in Spanish in Madrid?
For an English speaker, everyday conversation at around B1 level usually takes several hundred hours of study and practice. Most adults living in Madrid get there in one to two years of steady part-time effort. The US Foreign Service Institute plans about 30 weeks of full-time training for Spanish to reach professional working proficiency.
Are language apps enough to learn Spanish?
Not on their own. Apps build vocabulary and a daily habit, but they train recognising answers more than speaking. Pair an app with a course, a tutor or a weekly intercambio so you actually practise saying things to real people.
Do I need to learn another regional language in Madrid?
No. Spanish (castellano) is the only official language in the Comunidad de Madrid, so everything from schools to the town hall works in Spanish. All your study time can go into Spanish.
What is the cheapest way to learn Spanish in Madrid?
Free classes at a public adult school (CEPA), a Comunidad de Madrid integration centre (CEPI) or the city council's immigrant information office. Several CEPAs say they take students all year while places remain. The next cheapest is an EOI course at 222 or 250 euros per course in 2026-27.
When do I apply to the EOI in Madrid?
For one-term Spanish courses starting in February 2027, apply from 15 December 2026 to 12 January 2027, after registering for the 19-euro level test between 1 December 2026 and 8 January 2027. For September courses, applications ran from 4 to 22 June 2026; the 2027 dates are published in spring.
How much does the EOI cost in Madrid?
In 2026-27 a course costs 222 euros for 120 hours (A1 and A2) or 250 euros for 135 hours (B1 and above), with no separate administrative fee from this year. Large families get 50% off or study free, and some other groups are exempt.
Do I need the DELE A2 for Spanish citizenship?
Yes, unless you are exempt. Nationality by residence requires the DELE at A2 or higher plus the CCSE test, both from the Instituto Cervantes. People whose nationality of origin is that of a Spanish-speaking country are exempt from the DELE but still take the CCSE. In 2026 the DELE A2 costs 138 euros in Spain and the CCSE 85 euros.
When is the next DELE A2 exam?
The next DELE A2 you can still book is Friday 12 February 2027, with registration closing on 7 January 2027. The 2027 calendar also has A2 sessions on 2 April, 22 May, 9 July, 10 September, 15 October and 13 November (Instituto Cervantes, checked October 2026).
How much does a Spanish course cost at a Madrid academy?
An intensive course of 20 lessons a week, about 15 hours, typically costs 190 to 240 euros for one week, evening groups about 150 to 200 euros per four weeks, and private classes about 35 to 42 euros an hour, plus an enrolment fee of 50 to 75 euros (published price lists of four Madrid schools, October 2026).
