The city of Madrid has 14 public holidays in 2027: 12 for the whole Comunidad de Madrid, set by Decree 82/2026 (BOCM, 1 October 2026), plus 2 local days approved by the Ayuntamiento, San Isidro (Saturday 15 May) and La Almudena (Tuesday 9 November).
Three of them fall on a Saturday (1 May, San Isidro and Christmas Day), so a Monday to Friday worker gets 11 weekdays off. The no-leave long weekends are 1 January, 19 March, Holy Week (25 to 28 March, four days), 16 August (the Assumption, moved from Sunday), 1 November and the 4 to 6 December weekend.
Every date below is confirmed in an official source. The Dos de Mayo (2 May) falls on a Sunday in 2027 and is not on the regional list.

Long weekends and puentes in Madrid in 2027
Madrid gets a strong spring in 2027: San José on a Friday, then Holy Thursday and Good Friday the following week. Here is every holiday that falls on a working day, and what it does to your week.
Every holiday on a working day, and what it gives you
- Friday 1 to Sunday 3 January: a 3-day weekend (New Year's Day), no leave needed.
- Wednesday 6 January (Epiphany) is a midweek holiday: a single day off, with no long weekend unless you add two days of leave.
- Friday 19 to Sunday 21 March: a 3-day weekend (San José), no leave needed.
- Thursday 25 to Sunday 28 March: a 4-day weekend (Holy Thursday and Good Friday), no leave needed.
- Saturday 14 to Monday 16 August: a 3-day weekend (the Assumption), no leave needed.
- Tuesday 12 October (National Day) is a puente day: take Monday 11 October off and you get 4 days, Saturday 9 to Tuesday 12 October, for one day of leave.
- Saturday 30 October to Monday 1 November: a 3-day weekend (All Saints' Day), no leave needed.
- Tuesday 9 November (La Almudena) is a puente day: take Monday 8 November off and you get 4 days, Saturday 6 to Tuesday 9 November, for one day of leave.
- Saturday 4 to Monday 6 December: a 3-day weekend (Constitution Day), no leave needed.
- Wednesday 8 December (Immaculate Conception) is a midweek holiday: a single day off, with no long weekend unless you add two days of leave.
The best-value stretches of leave
These are calculated for someone who works Monday to Friday and gets every holiday on this page off. Check your own contract and collective agreement before you book anything.
- Friday 1 to Sunday 10 January: 10 days off for 4 days of leave (4, 5, 7, 8 January). New Year and Three Kings joined up: four days of leave around the Epiphany Wednesday buys ten days.
- Friday 19 to Sunday 28 March: 10 days off for 3 days of leave (22, 23, 24 March). San José straight into Holy Week. Holy Thursday and Good Friday are both holidays in Madrid, so three days of leave gives you ten days off.
- Saturday 6 to Tuesday 9 November: 4 days off for 1 day of leave (8 November). La Almudena on a Tuesday: take Monday 8 November and you get a four-day weekend a week after All Saints.
- Saturday 4 to Sunday 12 December: 9 days off for 3 days of leave (7, 9, 10 December). The December puente: Constitution Day on Monday and the Immaculate Conception on Wednesday.
Holidays that fall on a weekend in 2027
The Comunidad de Madrid moved one Sunday holiday to the Monday in 2027: the Assumption (Sunday 15 August) is observed on Monday 16 August. Three more holidays fall on a Saturday and are not moved:
- Labour Day falls on Saturday 1 May.
- San Isidro falls on Saturday 15 May.
- Christmas Day falls on Saturday 25 December.
The Dos de Mayo (Sunday 2 May) is not on the 2027 list at all. If you work Saturdays, as many people in retail and hospitality do, the Saturday holidays are still days off for you.
Madrid city's local holidays in 2027
The Ayuntamiento de Madrid's full council approved the city's two local holidays for 2027 unanimously on 29 September 2026:
- Saturday 15 May: San Isidro, the city's patron and the centre of the San Isidro fiestas. Because it falls on a Saturday, it gives Monday to Friday workers no extra day off this year.
- Tuesday 9 November: the Virgen de la Almudena, the city's patroness. A puente day: take Monday 8 November off for a four-day weekend.
The council kept the traditional dates rather than moving San Isidro to a weekday. The Comunidad de Madrid also publishes every municipality's local holidays together in the BOCM; the dates above are the ones the city approved.
Working outside the city? Alcobendas, Pozuelo, Getafe, Alcalá and every other town in the region choose their own two local days. Your local holidays are those of the town where you work.
What about school holidays?
Schools close on every public holiday on this page, but term dates, the Easter and Christmas breaks and any extra non-teaching days are set separately by the Comunidad de Madrid's education department, and individual schools can add a few days of their own. Do not plan childcare from the public holiday list alone: use your school's own calendar for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 term dates.

What is open and closed on a public holiday in Madrid?
A public holiday in Madrid runs much like a Sunday. Exact opening hours vary by business, so treat this as a guide and check the places that matter to you the day before.
- Government offices are closed. The town hall, the foreigners' office (Extranjería), the police stations that take NIE and TIE appointments, the social security and tax offices: none of them offer appointments on a holiday. If you are hunting for a cita previa, holiday weeks have fewer slots.
- Banks and post offices (Correos) are closed. Cash machines work as normal.
- Shops: Madrid's rules give shops wide freedom over opening days, so many supermarkets, chains and shopping centres open on holidays, often with shorter hours. Smaller independent shops more often close. Check your local supermarket's holiday hours.
- Bars and restaurants mostly open, and holidays are busy eating-out days for local families. Book a table for lunch, especially on long weekends.
- Public transport runs, usually on a Sunday or holiday timetable with fewer services. Metro, EMT buses and Cercanías keep running.
- Health care: your health centre (centro de salud) is closed for routine appointments, but hospital emergency departments are open 24 hours, and every area has a duty pharmacy (farmacia de guardia). The rota is posted on the door of any pharmacy.
- Museums and sights often open on holidays, but many close on 1 January and 25 December. Check the official website before you go.
How public holidays work for residents
How many holidays does a worker in Spain get?
Spanish labour law caps paid public holidays at 14 a year: up to 12 national and regional days, fixed each year in a decree by the regional government, plus 2 local days chosen by each town hall. All 14 are paid and you do not have to make the hours up. That is on top of your annual leave, which is at least 30 calendar days by law.
Local holidays follow where you work, not where you live
The two local days belong to the municipality where your workplace is. If you live in Madrid but your office is in Alcobendas, you get Alcobendas's local holidays, not Madrid's. Schools and public offices follow the local holidays of the town they are in. This trips up a lot of newcomers who commute across a municipal boundary.
Sunday and Saturday holidays
Spain does not automatically move a holiday that lands on a weekend. Each regional government decides, in its yearly decree, whether to move a Sunday holiday to the Monday. A Saturday holiday is normally not moved, so Monday to Friday workers simply do not gain a day. If you do work Saturdays, as many people in shops and hospitality do, the Saturday holiday is a day off for you.
If you have to work on a holiday
Hospitals, transport, hotels, restaurants and many shops work through every holiday. If you are one of those workers, your collective agreement (convenio colectivo) sets the compensation, usually extra pay or a day off in lieu. Check your own agreement or ask your employer; it varies by sector.
Freelancers (autónomos)
If you are self-employed, nobody gives you the day off, but your clients, your gestoría, the tax office and the social security office will all be closed. Deadlines that land on a holiday generally move to the next working day for official procedures, but do not count on that for private contracts.
Planning tips for residents
The cheapest big break of the year is in March
Three days of leave (22 to 24 March) joins San José and Holy Week into ten days off. Madrid empties out over Easter, so if you stay, the city is quiet; if you go, book early, because half of Madrid is doing the same.
San Isidro still happens on a Saturday
You do not get a weekday off, but the fiestas at the Pradera de San Isidro and the chotis in the plazas go ahead. A Saturday San Isidro is actually easier to enjoy if you work weekdays.
Check whether your office is in the city
A lot of Madrid jobs are in business parks in Alcobendas, Las Rozas or Tres Cantos. Those towns have their own local holidays, so you may work on 9 November and be off on a different day.
Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are working days
Neither is a public holiday. Many offices close early, but your employer is not obliged to give you the day. In 2027 both are Fridays, so taking them as leave makes a long weekend.
